Required Experience

First-time applicants must have at least 4 years of full-time experience in the industry sector that will be listed on the credential.

Verification of work experience means written confirmation of the applicant’s qualifying experience, signed by the applicant’s past or present employer(s) on company letterhead that attests to and/or includes all of the following:

1. Employer’s name, address, and telephone number
2. The working relationship of the person signing the verification to the applicant
3. Beginning and ending dates of employment
4. Complete description of duties
5. A statement as to whether or not the employment was full-time (If employment was less than full-time, an accounting of the number of hours the applicant was employed is required.)

Self Employed or Avocational Experience

If the applicant was self-employed or if the applicant’s experience was avocational, verification shall include a statement, signed and notarized by the applicant and a witness, detailing the information described in 1–5 above, and must be further substantiated, in writing, by:

A. other person(s) having first-hand knowledge of the applicant’s self- employment or avocation, such as the applicant’s accountant, landlord where a commercial lease was signed and paid, or a major supplier of goods or services AND

B. customers or other users of services performed

such that the time periods during which the witnesses had knowledge of the applicant’s self-employment, together add up to the required amount of experience.

Recent Experience Requirement

At least one year of the required work experience must be within the last three years and all four years within the last ten years immediately preceding the issuance of the credential. 1000 clock hours shall be the minimum required for each year of work experience. Part-time work experience may be accumulated to equate to the required 1000 clock hours of work experience.

Substituting Education for Work Experience

In some circumstances, recent, relevant education or an advanced license may be used to substitute a combined maximum of two years of the required work experience.

Completion of forty-eight (48) semester units of postsecondary vocational training related to the industry named on the credential and accomplished within the past 10 years, may be substituted for a maximum of one year of required work experience. The course work must be verified by official transcript and may be made on a pro rata basis up to the one-year maximum.

Additionally, one of the following may be substituted for a maximum of one year of required work experience:

  • Possession of a college degree or advanced industry certificate related to the industry sector to be named on the credential. OR
  • Possession of an active State or NMLS issued Mortgage Broker or Real Estate Broker license at any time within the five years immediately preceding issuance of the credential . The license must not have been subsequently suspended or revoked for disciplinary reasons or gone inactive immediately prior to expiration.

An individual must have at least two years of actual work experience to qualify for the credential.

All requirements to earn the certification must be completed during the calendar year that will appear on the credential. Also, please note that the professional can receive credit for only one positive review per person.

First time candidates will also meet a minimum experience requirement, but the bulk of the requirements center around gaining and maintaining verified consumer and peer endorsements.

License Verification

Basic preparedness for working in the profession. This is measured by annual verification of the candidate’s professional  State Issued or NMLS license to conduct business as a:

    • Mortgage Loan Originator or Broker
    • Real Estate Sales Agent or Broker
    • Real Estate Appraiser
Professional Experience
4 years of full-time professional experience must be verified as a prerequisite to becoming a certification candidate.

Consumer Endorsements

5 verified consumer endorsements must be obtained during the calendar year that will be listed on the credential. A negative review subtracts 2 positive ones.

Professional Recommendations

3 verified professional references must be obtained during the calendar year that will be listed on the credential. A negative review subtracts 2 positive ones.
